Phonics & Geometry Videos For Grades K-1

                                                                  Grade 1 Phonics Song

Phonics instruction is a crucial part of the development of a child's reading skills. As children begin to develop phonological awareness and are able to decode words, it is then that they can begin to comprehend the text they are reading.  In order to read, one must understand the sounds of which letters and pairs of letters make.  These sounds together form words.  During a phonics lesson, this video would be a fun alternative way to reinforce the material and may also appeal to students who may not learn as efficiently through lecture. The song's catchy tune may also aid in the memorization process, which may refer to when encountering the digraphs in reading material. For grade 1, it is a Common Core Reading Standards: Foundational Skills K-5 standard, that students know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

K-1 Shapes and Space

A knowledge of shape and space is perhaps one of the earliest geometric skills children will establish.  At this time, students begin to perceive 2 dimensional objects in a new way and are able to learn their formal names.  Over time students will begin to develop classifications of special shapes such as parallelograms and trapezoids. When beginning to introduce young students to shape and spatial knowledge, incorporating animated videos is a way to implement variation into the lesson. Again, it caters to students of different learning types and can allow them to make associations between what they are learning through the lecture and what they are watching in the video. New Jersey Common Core math standard CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.A.2 states that students have the ability to correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or size.
